If anything, it sounds like you've just had atypical luck with the hard drives on one machine. There's nothing about Apple's design (save maybe a bad batch of drives from a supplier) that would lead to a high rate of hard drive failures. I have had an external hard drive crash on me. I've never had a hard drive fail in any of my Apple notebooks. I don't know why you're judging a company by a fairly common failure mechanism (hard drive crashes) for all computers. It's just depressing that I had a PC notebook that lasted me for three years no problem (travelled with me to University) and a macbook can't even last me a year. "almost" the cost of a new Mac Book (and another year's warranty $100/year). So of course this is my second time around = $980. On my bill for the first hard drive replacement the total was $487.60 including parts and labour (covered by warranty).
